This plea was prompted by the tragic incident where 41 migrants lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea earlier in August. "Another tragic shipwreck happened a few days ago in the Mediterranean -- 41 people lost their lives," the Pope conveyed. "I have prayed for them."
The survivors of the shipwreck, four migrants from Africa, recounted their harrowing experience. They managed to stay afloat using makeshift flotation devices after their boat capsized off the coast of Tunisia. Eventually, they found themselves on an abandoned boat without a functioning motor. They were later rescued by a cargo ship and transferred into the custody of the Italian coast guard.
Francis mournfully acknowledged the grave reality that has been unfolding. "Sadly and shamefully, we must say that since the beginning of the year, almost 2,000 men, women, and children have already died trying to reach Europe. This is an open wound on our humanity." The Pope expressed his earnest desire to support both political and diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving this dire situation. He commended those who are tirelessly working to prevent shipwrecks and provide assistance to migrants.
During this occasion, Pope Francis extended his solidarity to a peace pilgrimage scheduled for August 14, on the eve of the feast of the Assumption, in Cameroon. A nation still grappling with violence and conflict, he urged individuals to join together in prayer. The Pope invoked the intercession of Mary to provide hope and guidance to the people of Cameroon. He expressed his hopes that through dialogue, peace and harmony would eventually prevail.
Since 2016, the English-speaking regions of Cameroon have been dealing with internal strife as militias attempt to break away and establish a new nation called Ambazonia. Pope Francis highlighted the urgency of the situation and the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions.
On August 12, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, conveyed his condolences and concerns to the Archbishop of Quito, Ecuador. This message was prompted by the tragic assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. Cardinal Parolin strongly condemned the violence and called for unity among citizens and political entities in the pursuit of peace.
