In a recent public statement, Mike Bickle, founder of the International House of Prayer Kansas City (IHOPKC), has acknowledged engaging in “inappropriate behavior” and confessed to “moral failures” from over two decades ago. While addressing these admissions, Bickle vehemently denies the recent sexual abuse allegations that have surfaced against him. This marks his first public response to the accusations since IHOPKC initiated a third-party inquiry into the matter.
Bickle, 68, expressed regret over actions that transpired more than 20 years ago, emphasizing that these issues, which he believed were previously addressed and covered by the atonement of Jesus, were only recently brought to his attention. In his public repentance, he apologized for the impact on his family and ministry and discouraged his followers from defending him online.
The allegations came to light in October when former IHOPKC leaders asserted that Bickle had engaged in sexual misconduct, breaching marital vows. The accusations gained further traction when a woman claimed she was sexually abused by Bickle during her internship at IHOPKC 27 years ago. Bickle, who has been on leave since October 26, finally saw IHOPKC launch a third-party investigation on Sunday, following weeks of internal deliberation.
In his statement, Bickle did not provide specific details about the nature of his past “inappropriate behavior” but clarified that he was not admitting to the more severe sexual activities being implied. He categorically labeled some of the accusations as “false allegations” and stated that he had promptly repented when confronted previously.
Despite Bickle's confession, critics argue that it falls short of acknowledging the gravity of the accusations against him. Preacher Joel Richardson expressed skepticism, stating that Bickle's admission represents only a fraction of his alleged wrongdoing and deemed it a mere public relations move.
IHOPKC has appointed Eric Volz, a spokesman from the international crisis resource agency David House, in response to the controversy. Volz considers Bickle's statement a positive step but emphasizes the necessity of an independent third-party investigation to discern the truth from the conflicting narratives.
As a prominent figure in charismatic Christianity, Mike Bickle's prayer movement has had a global impact, inspiring the establishment of numerous "houses of prayer." The allegations have led to repercussions, with the Florianópolis House of Prayer in Brazil being the first to distance itself from Bickle during the ongoing investigation.
While Bickle refrains from public ministry for an "extended season," possibly indefinitely, he views this period as God’s “delayed” loving discipline on his life. He expresses willingness to accept the duration of this season based on the guidance of other leaders and commits to reengage in preaching ministry only if affirmed by God through others.
