In a tragic incident that occurred on July 9, a 31-year-old woman named Amina Nanfuka was killed by her husband, 40-year-old Abudullah Waiswa, in eastern Uganda. The motive behind this heinous act was believed to be Nanfuka's recent decision to convert to Christianity. The devastating news has sent shockwaves through the local community in Bugiri town, Bugiri District.
Amina Nanfuka had recently returned from a medical check-up in Kampala and had also attended a worship service in the capital city. It was during this service that she decided to accept Christ into her life. Unfortunately, her newfound faith became the catalyst for her tragic demise.
According to a close relative, who chose to remain anonymous for security reasons, Nanfuka had spent some time in Kampala earlier in June, seeking treatment for health issues related to her uterus. While she was recuperating at a relative's home, a compassionate pastor visited and prayed for her recovery. It was during this period that the relative shared the message of Jesus Christ with Nanfuka, and she expressed a desire to accept Him as her Lord and Savior. However, she decided to wait until her next medical check-up before officially embracing Christianity.
On July 8, accompanied by the relative, Nanfuka returned to Kampala, leaving her three young children in the care of their grandmother. The following morning, they attended the church service, where Nanfuka made her public declaration of faith in Christ. As they were leaving the church, Nanfuka proudly showed her Luganda-language Bible, a gift from the pastor, to the relative.
Tragically, they encountered a close friend of Waiswa, Ariko Yahaya, who noticed the Bible and sarcastically asked Nanfuka if she now attended church regularly. Nanfuka remained silent, and they quickly left the scene. Upon arriving home later that day, Waiswa confronted his wife about her church attendance, accusing her of lying about her medical check-up. In a fit of rage, he locked her in their bedroom and demanded to see the Bible.
The relative, who was also present during the confrontation, heard distressing noises from inside the room, including kicks and slaps. Nanfuka's screams for help sent shock and fear throughout the household. As neighbors rushed to aid, Waiswa managed to escape.
Upon entering the bedroom, they found Nanfuka unconscious and severely injured, with blood coming from her mouth. They immediately rushed her to a nearby clinic, but tragically, she was pronounced dead upon arrival. The evidence indicated that she had been strangled and hit with a blunt object around her mouth.
The relative suspects that Yahaya might have informed Waiswa about Nanfuka's visit to the church, possibly triggering his violent reaction. At present, the police are actively searching for Waiswa, who has gone into hiding following the incident.
The grief-stricken community laid Nanfuka to rest at her father's home in Eyingo village. Her children are now under the care of their grandparents, left to cope with the devastating loss of their mother.
This appalling incident sheds light on the ongoing persecution of Christians in Uganda. Despite constitutional guarantees of religious freedom, the nation continues to witness such tragic acts against those who choose to embrace Christianity.
